Situated at about 81km north of Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab got it’s Arabic name for the golden sand that covers its beaches, but there is much more to Dahab than golden sand.
Dahab is cool, not only because the spirit of the laid-back sixties still remain (the entire beachfront of Assalah was a former ” hippie haven”) but also because cool winds always blow in Dahab making it one of the best locations in the peninsula for wind-surfing. For the golden sands for which Dahab was named, you must go down to the lagoon area. Experienced divers flock to Dahab for it is renowned for it’s deep-sea dive sites.
At the southern tip of Assalah, Lighthouse Reef is a good snorkeling site for novices, most popular though and attracting the experienced divers is Eel Garden and Blue Hole about 6km away, caution is advised as both locations are known to be dangerous.
For those who prefer staying dry, Dahab is the perfect departure point for a Bedouin guided tour of the awe-inspiring desert.
After you have seen all that Dahab has to offer you will know why it is called the ”Pearl of the Gulf”
