The town of El Alamein is one gigantic war memorial. More than 80,000 soldiers were killed or wounded in El Alamein in the battle to control Africa during the Second World War.
It is the site where the Allied Forces General Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery defeated German Field Marshal General Erwin Rommel also known as the ‘Desert Fox’, in 1942.
For those who remember and for those who want to know about it, El Alamein is worth the detour.
In Commonwealth Cemetery, lie 7000 graves of soldiers of the Commonwealth who lost their lives there.
The German War Memorial: a sandstone fortress with the look and feel of a medieval castle, totally silent but for the sound of the sea, it is the last resting place of the German dead.
The Italian War Memorial: about 4km further, is a tall slender white marble tower. It is full of echoes and eerily beautiful. A list of the dead Italian soldiers is etched on the marble walls.
The War Museum filled with uniforms memorabilia and war information, round out a visit to the memorials.
Many sunken submarines lie on the sea bed, from El Alamein to Marsah Matrouh. Exciting diving expeditions can be organized.
